2001 Pontiac Montana Sport Extended Review
ProsLots of cool options and looks good ConsIt is not a Honda!

Whatever It Takes Buy A Honda!!!! — When we were looking into buying a van I told my husband I wanted a Honda. He insisted that we didn't go below the year 2000 when we bought something. We couldn't afford a Honda in this year range. We would have had to get a 1998 or so. Anyway, we found a 2001 Pontiac Montana. They are pretty and have a lot of cool options. I do really love that about it. As for the realiabilty it leaves a lot to be desired. It has had to have a front left wheel bearing, an intake gasket, an oil pump, a set of main bearings, and the fuel gauge doesn't work, the drivers window rolls up crooked adn the transmission is slipping. I did put some Lucas stuff in the transmission and it helped but who knows for how long. I tell my husband that we wouldn't be having all these issues with a Honda even if was a little older.

Comfy Family Vehicle — Good power, sporty looks. Good for hauling the kids. Very comfortable for long trips. Wish gas mileage were better, but it is a big van. Average price on repairs. Had the transmission rebuilt and it seemed like a fair price. Overall nice vehicle. Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsThe van was a great people mover, 255000KMS and I traded it in on a 2006. Consate drivers wheel bearings like crazy

2001 Pontiac Montanna — I bought it because I needed a van big enough for 7, I know these vans have have intake gasket issues, but in 255000kms, the engine was never touched. Tires, and maintance was all i put into this van, aside from the fact I put 3 drivers wheel into it. If I could find another low mileage one I would buy it. Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsNothing really, right now we have all the paneling out and are re-furbishing the interior. Yeah, I know, silly. But trust, it needed it bad. ConsIt's older and unless you have the know how or the money in the bank, there is no point in purchasing one. I would go with something a lot simplier under the hood on my next purchase.

Don't Buy One. — I really really hate my van, I bout it as is and have had to put so much work into it. Luckily my Dad is a certified Master Mechanic, so when I need help I can ask him... One time it wasn't running at all, no nothing, not even dashboard, and I had to call him for help. So with my neighbor's tools and Dad on the phone, I got it going again. Plus with all the fuse relay problems this thing has been having I should be an electrician, and I haven't even been to school. Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsIt is fun to drive a tank that has some go to her. ConsIf you want to actually have some real fun with a vehicle then a van is not for you.

It's Reliable And Gets The Job Done. It Helps To Have A Party Van From Time To Time. — Acceleration: She can get off the line pretty well. She can pick up speed pretty fast. Breaking: She can break well, but being a van it will pick up a lot of momentum. It won't break on a dime. The breaks do squeal, but that isn't an indication of wear. There's still a lot of thickness of those break pads. Handling: It handles great, especially with the Traction System. It doesn't handle tight turns at speeds higher than 10-15 mph. Appearance: Take care of it and it will always look like she did the day she left the lot. Cost: She gets 20 mpg's highway at the max. The tank will normally need filled once a week and will cost about $40. It doesn't need much maintenance aside from oil changes. Primary Use: Commuting to work

If You Want A Lemon Get A Montana 2001 — two transmission failures left me stranded one under warranty and one last nov (06). I baby this unit 100klm on cruise hyway miles. Now they the GM mechanic admitts the rebuilt one has a extra cooling unit he had to install otherwise no warranty.(cost $2800. plus car rental hotels, gas home & return to pickup van a week later.$700.) have had to replace two sets of rear pipes on air conditioning.one under warranty one cost $400. Three times failures in wiring to sensors ABS. Cold in winter, told you have to drive in 3rd gear if you want heat. so much for gas mileage in Canada. Rear tires always bald spotting, if travelling highway. solution roate tires just moves the problem around. next set does same so they alliveate a symptom had 4 different mechanics tell me alignment is problem. Believe the highway speeds with ant thing over 200lbs in rear of van are causing the rotation profile to change. Thanks for that Gm after I paid your $1400. extended warranty. I only had too pay about $6000. in 6 years. Needless to say Now it appears the intake manafold is sucking in the antifreeze. I am selling this lemon as fast as I can. |
