When compared with its more expensive S-class brother, the S500, the 2001 Mercedes Benz S430 was rated as a "best buy," an option that saved the proud owner thousands of dollars without sacrificing much in the way of performance or luxury.
The S430 only loses 27 points in horsepower to the S500, pumping out 275 horses from a 4.3 liter, V8 engine. The wide, 295 lb-ft torque band delivers "seat of your pants" acceleration, making the difference negligible.
In road tests the S430 made 60 from zero in 7.2 seconds - hardly numbers worth scoffing at for the budget-minded, entry-level S-class buyer.

Following a major overhaul of the S-class in 2000, Mercedes-Benz seemed to have worked out some first-year kinks when it rolled out the 2001 S500. It was also the first year the S500 was available with an AMG-designed sport package, crossing the classic S500 with its souped-up, AMG cousin.
The sport package upped the wheels to 18-inchers and improved handling, but even on its own the S500 held its own. The vehicle has a 5.0 liter, 302 horsepower V8 engine and is big and long, letting drivers feel the car hug the road.
Inside, controls weren't intuitive enough to keep some drivers happy, particularly for the climate control and navigation systems. But the Distronic adaptive control system - able to sense cars and adjust speed automatically - earned high marks from owners.

Built as a high performance version of Mercedes-Benz's S-class, the 2001 S55 AMG's highlight was its engine. The car featured a 349 horsepower 5.5 liter AMG engine, dual exhaust, AMG sculpted bodywork, and the S5 Sport Package.
New standard features for the 2001 S55 AMG included Active Body Control, a power rear window sunshade and InfoServices customized Information System. The company also introduced new optional features including voice control for the integrated Motorola Digital Timeport telephone, a tire pressure monitoring system, and an electronic trunk closer.
Built by Mercedes-Benz's high-performance AMG unit, the S55 AMG is modeled on the S550 platform but offers more speed and performance. Essentially, it's a street ready race car built in limited numbers for the Mercedes enthusiast.

Within days of its release, more than one automotive journalist had billed the 2001 Mercedes-Benz S600 as "the best sedan in the world." The car featured a new Mercedes engine, a 362 horsepower V12 that offered "effortless thrust with an uncanny ability for overall refinement."
The engine not only offered better performance but improved the gas guzzling S600's fuel economy by 20 percent. The engine also improved torque.
Other standard features included ABD active suspension, high polish 17-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust, and a trunk mounted CD changer. An optional sport package gave the car a slightly more aggressive look.
