The IS 300 compact sedan joined the Lexus model lineup in 2001, replacing ES series at the entry-level. The IS 300 also joins the GS series as it is geared towards performance. This was the smallest car that Lexus had ever built, at just 3270 pounds and 176 inches long.
The original IS housed a 3.0 liter inline six, which made 215 horsepower and provided 218 pound-feet of torque. The sports sedan sped from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, and from there it could brake quickly back down to a stop in 117 feet. Gas mileage was surprisingly low considering the size of the car. It achieved 18 mpg in city driving and 23 on the highway. While the IS 300 did have a unique tiptronic feature, it was not available with a true manual transmission in 2001. All ISs were rear wheel drive.
As its price reflected, the IS was certainly not the GS. Owners and reviewers found that this new sedan didn't have the focus on luxury that might be expected from Lexus. Drivers were pleased wih the tiptronic technology that was featured in the IS, but it was not a substitute for a stick. The IS 300 would undergo several changes for the 2002 model year.
