Great — Good well built car. Parts last quite a while but are expensive to replace when broken. Not alot of power from the factory but with upgraded injector nozzels it drives great. Awesome car for a base plateform to build power

Pros

Nice look, fun to drive.

Cons

Some annoying design flaws, definatly needs a lot more power. THE LATER MK4 MODELS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

Jetta Gl Mk4 — PERFORMANCE: Honestly speaking, I love the mk4 Jetta, and the mk4 is my prefered generation for Jettas. I find the GL version, which is the starter line Jetta, has decent acceleration, given you're driving standard. I haven't driven the automatic version, but judging for the speed of this car, I could only assum that it would a pretty boring drive. Although it is not the best of mk4 Jettas out there, I really do like the whole performance of the car. It is overall a fun drive, and I have even had people ask me if it is a 1.8t because of the way I handle. That just shows that the standard version is definatly worth it. BUILD QUALITY: The actual build on the other hand, isn't the best I've seen from VW. The early mk4s had many design flaws that were thankfully changed in the later mk4s. First of all, there was this weird thing with the front doors, where water would pour in the cracks and end up where the hinges are. Normally this wouldn't cause much of a problem. But since I live in Montreal, the water from all the melted snow durinf winter time would go in the cracks and then freeze the door shut. Sometimes I would have to spend a good 15-20 minutes just trying to open the door without having to bend the endges of the door. Then there are the little things like the cup holder positions. The front cup holders, where placed on top of the radio buttons and wouldn't hold the cup extremly well. So not only would it sometimes spill a bit of coffee on the little cup holder tray, but it would also block your vision of the radio and can sometimes get in the way while you are shifting gears. And then there are the rear cup holders. All I have to say about that is, FORGET ABOUT USING THEM! Because if you even attempt to use them even with the smallest drink, there is a high chance that there will be a lovely new stain in the back seat floors. Then there are little things here and there that keep screwing up: brakes need changing often, the front bumper black rectangle things sometimes fall off, etc. APPEARANCE: I am actually a big fan of the look of the mk4 Jettas. I ike the exterior look. There's something very neutral yet aggressive about it. the interior is ok, but of course my car was an absolute bar minimum Jetta, so I never got to enjoy all the little gadgets that the higher models had, and of course no sunroof. But the overall interior is pretty nice. The only problem is the back seat. I'm around 6'1 1/2", which isn't extremely tall, but tall enough to make the person sitting behing me in this car suffer...even if it is a short girl... COST: Well the gas is pretty good. On a good day a full tank (around 45-50L) would cost around 40$. With more relaxed driving that could last me 400-500kms, and with aggressive driving, often reaching its maximum speeds on the highway, it would last 300-400kms. The overall maintenance is not too bad, as long as you take car of the car. If you're planning on doing quick and cheap fixes by repairing the car with knock off brands, then your better off buying yourself some japanese car. This car requires its original parts if you don't want any trouble, regardless of the costs... FUN FACTOR: This car is definatly fun to drive. Changing gears is very smooth. My Jetta only has measley 115 HP and it's this much fun. I can't wait to get my hands on a 1.8t or a VR6:D

Pros

like all cars, it was tunable but the diesel made it unique

Cons

Its a VW

2000 Jetta Tdi — The Jetta is an all-around nice car. The diesel, not so much. The roughest time I had with this car was during the winter. There were many times during the winter where the car had a hard time turning over. I had to keep the block heater plugged in to get it started. I'm not complaining about the performance. Despite having such low horsepower, there is so much torque that i chirped the tires in four gears. This car was far more modified than my other car. This had new pads and rotors, cold air intake, bilstein shocks and struts, strut tower, and a cat-back exhaust. I also had the ECU re-mapped. The maintenance was extraneous. I was doing more repairs than upgrades. On the other hand, the gas mileage was unbelievable.

Pros

Rarely have problems with performance, good size for city, decent mileage.

Cons

Electrical problems particularly with lights inside and out, cheap glove compartment handles, cigarette lighter plugi-in area too tight, wheel locks are unnecessery, turbo is okay.

Runs Great But Electrical Problems Are A Nuisance. — Runs great, but electrical problems such as light fixtures are a severe problem and I see that I'm not the only one. I see these cars on the road with at least one external light out all the time. Other than that and besides the turbo having a second and half delay (as all do - only Porsche has perfected turbo charged systems), it's a nice city car.

Pros

Handles well

Cons

Costs a lot to repair

25

Not Worth The Price — The car handles well, I like the feel of it, but man does it fall apart a lot. I have put well over 50% of its value back in to it for repairs. Being a foreign car I should have seen high prices, but man 250 bucks to do a tune up on a stock car?

Pros

Build quality, low maintenance, fuel economy, quietness, dateless styling.

Cons

Interior room, lack of power seats, some electronic issues.

Excellent Car! — After being a Ford fan for years (and still am at heart), I was persuaded into a VW and it's been the best decision car wise I have made. After 227,000km it still runs as if it were new. It is fast enough, the buld quality is excellent for a small car and very good on gas. I've put just over $1000 in maintenance in 4 years of ownership. I definitely recommend the MK4 Jetta to anyone!

Pros

Great Power to build off of.

Cons

TOO MANY FREAKIN SENSOR ERRORS!

25

Good Build Car — Throttle body becomes a problem around 100k. VR6 engine is a nice combo of power and gas economy. Lots of upside for upgrades such as turbo kits, SC's and anything else you can think of. I just wish that I had found out about the throtle body issue before I had bought it because it started to act up about 500 miles after I bought the car. Other than that, I can't wait to see what this car is going to be able to do in another 2 years. Lets just say turbo at least.

Pros

Looks, Interior (except rear seats), MPG, trunk space.

Cons

Engine, although newer models are better

55

Great Car — Overall I love this car, however I do wish I would have sprung for the 1.8T or the VR6. With a miserly 115 hp this is not a performance car. I do like the pick-up it has in the 65-80 mph range. It's the 0-60 pick-up I wish I had more of. The interior is roomy enough and decently laid out. I don't like the Soft-Touch interior, it is rubbing off. The 2.0L engine "used" oil (1 qt per 100 miles) which was enough to ruin my engine over the first couple years I owned it. I had new rings put in to solve the problem, no more used oil...oh, and switched to synthetic at about 100K miles. Gas mileage is adequate, about 28-30 mpg highway. Which is nice because the cost of repairs seems to be slightly higher than other cars.
