2000 Subaru Forester

The SUV that rides like a car, the 2000 Subaru Forester continues to be an attractive combination of cargo flexibility and AWD muscle with the ride height and maneuverability of a solid sedan.  The base trim is dropped this year, leaving only the 2000 Forester L and S.  Both feature a 2.5-liter boxer H4 engine rated at 165-hp and paired with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.  The L sits on 15-inch wheels, the S on 16-inch, and both come standard with ABS brakes, dual-front airbags, and a hill assist system.

The L is well equipped with power features, a rear wiper, foglights, and a roof rack.  In 2000 it gets cruise control as well.  The more high-end S comes with heated seats, keyless entry, alloy wheels, and a chrome grille.  It gets a limited slip differential to improve AWD performance.  A trailer hitch is optional on both Forester models.  Though equipped with AWD, the 2000 Forester is not really an off-roader.  However, its lower ride height means a safer, more stable car for families, which is appropriate since most of today's SUVs are bought for family hauling and not back-road adventures.  Rear seats do split-fold to offer more cargo space of nearly 65 cubic feet.

Most drivers like the option of having SUV space with a car-like feel behind the wheel that the 2000 Forester provides.  By far, the biggest praise goes to the awesome full-time AWD, which performs brilliantly in any weather condition.  Power is good too, and the 21/28 gas mileage is better than expected.  The 2000 Forester does have some repair issues, most notably with wheel bearings.  The other major complaint is the cramped rear passenger room and front legroom.
