"People would know you're rich" if you drove a 2000 SL500 when it was launched in late 1999. But others felt that the price of the car was too steep for a V8 powered Roadster that didn't impress as much or handle as well as some of Mercedes' other offerings.
Mercedes slightly dampened complaints about the high cost of upkeep by offering free maintenance during the warranty period. The 2000 model was offered in Designo and standard editions, with a few more colors being offered in the Designo trim.
Some of the biggest complaints centered on the rear window, which was made of plastic. The window looked cheap and was easily damaged, according to owners.

The 2000 SL600 was "surprisingly nimble" for a 4,400 pound car, thanks in no small part to a 389 horsepower, V12 engine. That produced an astonishing 420 ft-lbs of torque and incredible handling for the two-seat convertible.
Big changes from the previous model year included the addition of the TeleAid emergency system as a standard feature and an optional Sport package that featured newly designed 18-inch wheels, high-performance tires, and different lower-body styling.
The biggest complaint stemmed from the Bose stereo system, which seemed "a bit dated." The sub-woofer, another driver said, took up too much storage space.
