2000 Lexus SC 400 Overview

This was the final year for the first generation of the Lexus SC coupe. The SC would reappear with a new design in 2002. For nine years, the SC 400 and its lower priced counterpart the SC 300 had seen little revision or improvement. Whispers had begun among experts and drivers that the SC was simply outdated compared to emerging competition. The new more affordable Mercedes CLK series was far superior with respect with performance.
The SC 400 did have a powerful 4.0 liter V-8 engine, aided by Variable Valve Timing technology. With 290 horses, it took the SC from 0 to 60 in about six seconds, and through the quarter mile in 14.7 seconds at 93 mph. Top speed was listed as 149 mph. While such numbers were still quite acceptable, the styling of the SC had lost its freshness. There was nothing new and exciting.
The SC's four-wheel independent suspension provided a smooth and stable ride throughout the speed range, and wind and engine noise were aptly muted even at high speeds. Drivers found the VVT-i V-8 more than adequate, making the SC perfect for open highway cruising. However, many of the pressing issues for owners dealt with the little things: no convertible, the notchback body, the rear window, styling, and minor interior details. It was time for a new SC.
