Money Pit — This car would be a great car if it was in good working order, but my 99 cougar is not. I would tell people to be various when looking to buy one of these cars, and to really look at the car to see how difficult it is to work on due to hand space

1999 Mercury Cougar V6 — I love my car. It has great acceleration and is incredibly reliable. Performance overall is outstanding. I rarely have problems with it, and I feel safe in it. I have fun driving it, it is very quick. It's pretty awesome.

Beast — i dislike the the fact that ford made this cougar front wheel drive, what a waste of a great muscle car that had always been in the past. over all i love the looks of this cougar and maybe ill get to play with the motor in the near future maybe take it a part.

Great Car And Easy To Find For Cheap Prices. Will Not Disappoint! — Great handling! Amazing feedback from the steering and holds the road very well. Goes fairly well in a straight line, but the automatic slush box thats in there takes a bit to downshift when the gas is pounded down while its moving. other than that i have no complaints, maintainence sucks sometims (ie alternator replacement) but im ok with that. build quality is good, by far better than that rice burning crap ive had before, although it does have some typical "ford noises" like rattles and squeaks but who cares? Ford power all the way!!!

Cons

Underpowered with design flaws.

A Fun Sporty Coupe To Drive With Some Unique Designs. — Acceleration is fair and acceptable for an average driver, but one isn't going to win any races on stock. Braking is pretty good even with rear drums and it handles very well. Repairs have been routine and nothing out of the ordinary. The engine bay is quite cramped and can be a real pain to work in that area. The interior is not the best designed with how the plastic pieces mesh, a fair amount of squeaks. I love the design both inside and out, having a good balance of lines and curves that make it pretty unique. The headlights and front bumper are great features. It's not too bad on gas, but some more low end torque would be great for city driving. Overall it's a fun car with some cool features and designs, but Ford went half assed on a lot of things. By trying to penny pinch and not committing to the redesign they goofed on some of the mechanics and didn't give it enough sports car "go". Good car as is, but has good potential if modified right.

Cons

It's Practical And Fun Offering A Stout V6 With A Manual Gearbox. — Great car overall, it has strong acceleration, as well as braking and the handling is phenomenal. This car loves mountain roads, autocross, etc. The styling is also awesome inside and out. For a 11 year old car it really fits in with newer model cars. The build quality is very good as well, most cars that are over 10 years old look, feel and sound the part while the Cougar doesn't. It's great on gas, with low maintenance, as long as you give it oil changes/general TLC and fuel it will run strong. The Cougar is insanely fun to drive, it is definitely a drivers car and like I mentioned earlier, it loves corners! There are not many cars in it's class that give you a V6 with a 5-speed manual, which is a great combination. The only problems or things to look out for are the alternators in the 01-02 Cougars, and the moonroofs in the 99-00 Cougars.

... — - you can have a lot of fun with this car - a lot of people confuse it with a jaguar;) - breaks are not so good for this car - it´s an old car, so now you have to repair a lot

Pros

Its a fun, quick, fuel efficient car.

Cons

Its not as fast as I would like, but its not meant to go fast in a straight line.

I Love It. — I own a 99 Mercury Cougar. It is a 2.5 Litre V6 with a 5-speed transmission. When I got her, she was wrecked on all of the body panels. Over 3500 dollars worth of damage.(according to estimates) The woman before me didnt want to fix it, so she sold it to me for 400 dollars. 98k miles on it. Runs perfect. It now has over 120K miles on her. It was an automatic car, but i converted it to a 5- speed. Mods - B & G 1.6 inch lowering springs, KYB struts SVT big bore intake manifold and throttle body, short ram cold air intake, mtx swap, straight dual exhaust, 5% tint, green LED underglow, rear strut tower brace, Gutted pre-cats, no main cat, shaved fender blinkers, shaved rear spoiler, shaved rear wiper, shaved radio antenna, 17" ADR wheels, v-tec tail light covers, etc. Future mods - 3.0 Litre motor(when the 2.5 goes out) LSD differential, painted dash, painted pillar plastics, koni adjustable struts, supercharger. Performance, this thing can be beat in a race, but it is a quick car. Lemme tell you, its not meant to go in a straight line. Its meant to be thrown around curves. With the stiffer/lower springs, it handles like its on rails. The fuel mileage is about 18-22 in town, and 28-32 on the highway. It looks like most of the new cars coming out today.(I think so) I love the car. Its been my favorite so far. It always puts a smile on my face. There's a few quirks, like fuel pumps, and alternators, but thats about the only major problem with the car. If treated right, these motors/trannys can last forever.

Awesome gas mileage....Not bad looking.

Cons

A bit gutless....But some mods will help that.

Great Car....amazing Quality For The Money! — The performance is average, acceleration is a bit better than I had hoped, braking is excellent, and it handles pretty well. Build quality is superb. I have owned it for about 3/4 of a year, and I've done no repairs....Although it does now have a bit of moaning coming from under the hood....But that's just a slipping belt, an easy and cheap fix. Appearance wise, I think the exterior looks pretty good. I mainly like the aggressive look of the headlights. Interior is just as good. with 4 bucket seats in two-tone colors, I think it looks pretty sporty. The cost of ownership is amazing. Well built, and it gets really good gas mileage. The fun factor is lacking a bit, due to the slight lack of power.....But a few engine mods, or exhaust system, will help lots!
