1998 Volkswagen Beetle 2 Dr STD Hatchback Review
ProsFun to drive, fun to look at... good German engineering. ConsDon't buy a 1998...just too many small issues...the new 2.5L Beetles are much better.

Decent Car...fun And All...but Don't Get A 1998...too Many Hassles. — Performance was adequate for a city environment...good brakes and handling. Rudimentary traction control took a little getting used to. The build quality was decent but a few frustrating things broke...gas filler cable, back hatch latch, hood latch, to name a few. It was decent on gas...fun to drive...easy to park. The fact that I could drive it (6'4", 275lbs) as easily as the wife (5' nuthin') made it a good fit for our family. Rear seating wasn't great but enough for short runs. It did well in the snow, too. Being the first year model for the New Beetle, it did have it's quirks and bad habits, but all-in-all it was a decent car. Heck, we ended up buying a 2005 and 2007 Beetle...and we might buy yet another! Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsClever styling, good handling and a contemporary chassis combine to make the New Beetle more than a remake of a good idea. It is a full-fledged, functional small car that overflows with the kind of whimsy and personality rarely found in cars today ConsThe back seat lacks headroom, the dash is as deep as a minivan and the wide windshield pillars occasionally block your view around corners.

Dream Come True — This is such a fun car to drive -- zippy as can be. As with most VWs, the plasticky interior is a bit cheap and shoddy - the dash is stupidly put- together (top dash panel clips broke during an AC/fan repair and are tough to replace) and the fabric on the ceiling is falling off. Even all the plastic molding and covers in the engine compartment are, in my opinion, unnecessary. Mechanically, the car is fabulous. I love it!

Proseverything Consbrakes, and the exaust

Pichirilo! — It doesn't have the best brakes, a bit hard to move the steering wheel, didn't need major repairs just a few details, the engine is in perfect shape, i spend 10 to 15 dolars of fuel per week, (pretty economic in my country for a gasoline car)

Vw Beetle — 10 years with my car and she's still going strong. Only in the last 2-3 years have I needed to start doing repairs. My car is over 100,000 miles so it's understandable. I love driving the bug! It handles excellently and it sticks to the road, it's the safest car I've ever driven.

ProsI really appreciated having an old, beat-up car to learn how to drive a manual transmission so that I didn't have to ruin a newer car. ConsOnce I fixed something, something else fell apart. And EVERYTHING was expensive to fix.
Not Active
Rip Betty The Bug — It was exactly what I wanted...when I was 18. As I got older, the "cutesy" look of the bug was no longer me. I definitely received ridicule from boyfriends, and car guys took advantage of me (based on the image of a cute girl with a red VW Beetle) by charging me for unnecessary repairs. Its Just A Love/hate Relationship. — I purchased this car in 2003 when it was a young 1998 with only 5, 500 miles. Sigh. It now has 61, 000. I never really wanted a beetle, we just got such a heck of a deal I just couldn't pass it up. And it's been alright since then- nothing too majorly wrong with it, mechanically. The interior is another story. Every single little plastic piece has come off. Eventually, I gave up and just started collecting them in a crate in the back seat. I have more pieces in the back-seat than I do on the car (seat flip up cover, both sides seat lean back roll thing, window switch covers, rear cup holder, door handle, fuse panel cover, the list is endless. . . VW needs to learn to make better trim pieces [and headlights, and brake light switches, and electrical systems. . . ] Overall though, I've had no major mechanical catastrophes YET, so I consider myself lucky. She is a good car and is reliable (she's only quite on me like four times lol) enough. Don't misinterpret my long list of cons, because I love my little car, when she isn't driving me insane. I Like This Car When It Is Running Great — I like this car when it runs good, but when it breaks it really breaks. It also is very expensive to fix it never knew that until I owned one. Besides that it gets great gas mileage. Get one if you like being safe cause it is Primary Use: Commuting to work

Good And Bad Of The New Beetle-- — great turning ratios, handles great, good gas mileage. High maitenance, lots of plastic pieces and fiberglass.defrost isnt that great.back seat has bad ventialtion and heater dosnt reach back seat. Cup holders are too small under radio and none for back seat.Hard for people to get in and out of back seat. --Fun to drive, easy to drive, super cute car,my 98 still looks like a brand new one.I love the flower vase and driving it daily.--Not a country car, best on only paved roads, does badly on snowy icey roads-- |
