1998 Lexus GS 400

Lexus introduced the GS 400 in 1998 to quell complaints that its GS cars lacked the power to be considered true sports sedans. Previous GS offerings were too big and had engines that were too small to be anything more than a four door, luxury sedan.

That changed with the GS 400's debut in 1998. The new vehicle had a 4.0 liter, V8 engine that delivered 300 horsepower and propelled the GS 400 from zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.4 seconds.

"The 4.0 liter engine is a magnificent work of art!" wrote one owner. "What other car accelerates so quickly and smoothly?" A common complaint for almost all Lexus models this year stemmed from the trunk-mounted CD changer.
