1997 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 2 Dr SL600 Convertible Review
ProsThe R129 style will probably alway remain very attractive and compared to the R230 sl's it offers far more utility value as far as having usable trunk space and back seat area storage. The V12 provides more than adequate performance and the side V12 emblems attract alot of attention. The reliabilty is very good and the ride is extremely comfortable. ConsIt is not a vehicle you'd take to a dealership for service unless you have a burning desire to throw away money as parts are very expensive as is labor. I do the majority of my own maintenance and aside from a right side timing chain cover oil leak it is a reliable car to own. Gas mileage is terrible in town(12 to 13 mpg) and based on the current price of 93 octane gas is expensive to drive on a daily basis. The little things like interior plastic trim are annoying in that they frequently break or fall off and need to be replaced. Tire wear in the rear is high sinxce there is no adjustibility as to camber or caster so tires tended to wear out faster on the inside tread face.

I Now Have 166,500 Miles On It And Have No Plans To Buy Any Other Car Anytime Soon.. — If I were to be real egocentric, I'd say the car draws alot of attention from both gearheads as well as the general public and seldom does a day go by where someone doesn't make a positive comment. You know, like wow, doesn't that V12 go really fast, to which I have no comment. I have a set of staggered Lorinser LM-5 rims on it along with cross drilled, slotted and ventilated rotors on both the front and rear which also adds to the car's appeal and stopping power. I wish that the car had about 100 more horsepower, which by today's standards would be about correct for a DOHC 6 liter V12 with variable valve timing, but as I've been told by numerous Mercedes mechanics and affectionadoes, they built the engine to last as opposed to drag racing performance. Oil changes can get expensive when you change every 8,000 miles with 14 quarts of Mobil 1 EP. Primary Use: Family transportation

ProsPerfect in every way. ConsExpensive to maintain. It's a labor of love.

A True Gentleman's Carriage. — The car is a dream when it works. I bought it for it's classic looks as I love the body style, but after a bit of time, you need more power. Receiving delivery of my SL65 AMG in 2 days. The car is beautiful to drive, a pleasure to ride and makes a statement about it's owner. It's not about flash, but about class. Truly timeless in design and built like a tank. I spent over 20K restoring this car to showroom condition (it was already in mint condition, but for me, it was a labor of love.) I own an Audi A8, an SL65 AMG (delivery soon), an SEL 500, a Ford Explorer, and a Ford Expedition. While all the cars have their purpose in life, the SL 600 is a true dream. If you're considering one vs. the SL 500, I would spend the extra money on the 600. It's worth every penny.

The Best Of The Best — The best car I have ever driven, it is quiet, the quality of the leatherwork is fantastic, yet with all this quietness at a touch on the throttle you are off, yet gently so, the suspension stops all the jarsand bumps, I was told by an admirer, after riding in it he was not sure whether to call it the Gentleman's Hot Rod, or The Rocket Ship Owner for 1 years, 0 months Miles Driven per Year:40,000

ProsBest roadster to buy in 1997. ConsPrice is closed to $450,000 in 1997. Very expensive and should have bought a Porsche 911 instead.

Mb Sl320 — Owned it between 1997-2004. A very reliable car and failed to give me any problems. 3200cc engine feels weak for such a heavy car. Hard Top was a drag to remove as it required at least 2 persons to lift the whole hard top before the soft top can be used.
