The S420 had a V8 engine that produced 275 horsepower. New for 1997 was a occupant detection sensor could deactivate the front passenger airbag. New xenon headlamps and a Parktronic parking-assistance system were new features available as options.
A recurring theme in user comments for the S420 in the middle years of its 1994-2000 production run centered on expensive maintenance problems.
