1997 Lexus SC 400 Overview

The 1997 SC 400 featured some new exterior styling that gave it a more aggressive and athletic appearance. Adjustments included a new front bumper, restyled foglamps, and aero-style side skirts. A trip computer was added, and the seats were softened. This was the last model before some significant engine improvements and the addition of a new 5-speed manual transmission.
A 4.0-liter V8 powered the SC 400, generating 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The SC shot from 0-60 in under seven seconds, which was not too bad, considering its 3,840-lb. curb weight. All SCs were 2+2 notchback bodies with rear-wheel drive. The RWD was perfect for highway cruising and accelerating through tight turns, but adverse weather conditions could present some frightening problems. The heavy body provided stable and solid feel, but weight could become a liability on slick terrain. Lexus did offer optional traction control, which helped a little.
Fuel efficiency was fair. The SC averaged 18 mpg in the city and 23 on the highway. Some drivers reported having to frequently change air filters to prevent fuel economy deterioration. Inside the SC, many found their driving experience enhanced by the sporty layout of the snug (but not cramped) wrap-around cockpit and its user-friendly ergonomics.
