One of the great things about the 1996 Dodge Intrepid STD base model is all the features that come standard, which usually are only options in other cars. There is, of course, the 3.3-liter, 161-hp V6 engine with 4-speed auto tran. New standard features in 1996 include ES-style features, such as fog lights, 16-inch wheels, and power locks. These go along with the tinted windows, tilt steering wheel, intermittent wipers, center console, and power heated mirrors that were already standard.
New options this year are a front split bench seat and polycast wheels. Power windows, sunroof, adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, and a 3.5-liter, 214-hp V6 engine upgrade the STD to a stylish sporty sedan. The 1996 Intrepid also was redesigned to reduce road noise and shudder.

Since the base model of the 1996 Dodge Intrepid offered a lot of the same standard features as the top of the line Intrepid ES, there were only a few characteristics that separated the two trims, most notably the engine. The 3.5-liter, 214-hp V6 engine replaced the 3.3 V6 as standard in the ES. At 20/28 mpg, this Intrepid not only gave you power and speed, but also decent fuel economy. Power windows, polycast wheels, and four-wheel ABS was also standard on ES and only an option on the base model. Leather interior, traction control and a passenger's side adjustable seat were ES-only options.
1996 Intrepid owners rave about the powerful engine, immediate acceleration, and responsive handling. The adjustable driver's seat is attractive. Some wish the rear seats would fold down to add more cargo room to the already huge trunk. The ride is extremely comfortable and there is a lot of room for friends and family. Brake, transmission, and electrical problems turns many owners away.
