In 1996, the Grand Caravan went through a resdesign to provide greater stability and convenience in the form of a driver's side sliding door and rear seats on roller for easier removal. The base STD model got a different engine, a 2.4-liter, 150-hp I4, with optional 3.0-liter, 150-hp V6. Standard features remained the same as in 1995, with dual front airbags, intermittent wipers, cloth seats, and 14-inch wheels. The driver's side sliding door was optional on base models. AWD is not an option in the 1996 Grand Caravan STD.
The roomy, family-friendly interior is a big plus for drivers, especially the innovative dual sliding doors. A lot of owners like the way the minivan handles on the road, tight and precise for such a large vehicle. Repair problems and road noise are major complaints.

Starting with a 2.4-liter, I4 engine, the 1996 Grand Caravan SE could be upgraded to a 3.0-liter, 150-hp V6 or a 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 to give the minivan a little more pep and acceleration on the highways.
The SE added features to the base model, including cruise control, tilt steering wheel, power heated mirrors, a tachometer, and four-wheel ABS standard. Options include air conditioning, power windows and locks, an anti-theft system, roof rack, keyless entry, and the driver's side sliding door, new in 1996. Drivers love the roominess, maneuverability, quiet ride, functional interior options, and storage configurations, but hate the fuel economy, mechanical problems, and feeble engine power with the smaller engines.

The 1996 Grand Caravan LE adds more luxury standard features to this extended version of Dodge's popular minivan. A 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 is standard, with an option to upgrade to a 3.8-liter, 180-hp V6. Upgrades from the SE trim include standard ABS, power windows and locks, air conditioning, and an overhead console with compass and temperature readouts. The new driver's side sliding door was offered as an option.
The excellent ride quality, storage options and interior layout, and spacious interior are why the Grand Caravan LE is popular, particularly when you include options like captain's chairs and leather seats. Questionable reliability, transmission and serpentine belt problems, and repair costs are downsides to owning a Grand Caravan.

A sportier version of the LE, the 1996 Grand Caravan ES adds on standard fog lights, leather steering wheel trim, and alloy wheels in an attempt to somehow make you forget that you actually are really driving a minivan.
Equipped with the 3.3-liter, 158-hp V6 engine, the ES can be given more kick with the 3.8-liter, 180-hp V6, both paired with a 4-speed auto tran. Still, it's a minivan, and its main purpose is to haul around people and things, and to make it easier, a new driver's side sliding door option and standard rollout rear seats are also available. Drivers like the handling, space, and sliding door, but would prefer better gas mileage and better transmission reliability.
