In 1996, the Cirrus LX replaced the base V-6 engine with a new DOHC 4-cylinder. The 2.5 liter V-6 was now available as an option. For the second year, rear seat headrests were also added.
The new 4-cylinder led to a slight drop in horsepower, down to 150. The optional V-6 produced 164 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage and performance differences were marginal from one engine to another. The 0-60 mph time remained between 9 and 10 seconds, and drivers could expect mpg averages around 25 in mixed driving.
The Cirrus was cheered by owners and reviewers as a very fun car to drive. While sedan didn't exactly jump off the line, the power supply seemed adequate for acceleration through the higher speed range, especially with the V-6. The suspension was tuned stiff, for increased responsiveness and more agile handling. Reliability was the most frequently listed owner complaint.

This Cirrus upper level trim included a new torque converter for 1996, for better engine response. A power sunroof also became available as an option this year. The LXi did not offer the option of a 4-cylinder engine like its lower priced counterpart LX.
The LXi was only available with a 2.5 liter V-6 that generated 164 horsepower and 163 pound-feet of torque. The Cirrus had a light aerodynamic build, which allowed for the very reasonable fuel economy rating of 20/28 mpg. Much to the chagrin of many drivers, the LXi could only be had with a four-speed automatic transmission. Every Cirrus rode on front wheel drive, and firm suspension.
The upscale LXi offers several additional fine touches and creature comforts, like leather seats and a premium sound system. It certainly offered all the handling and ride benefits of the LX, but it was also plagued with same reliability problems. Brakes, wiring, transmission, and steering pumps were all common issues.
