ProsCheap to run ConsLooks out dated

Times Are Hard — Performance - Acceleration very poor, braking poor, handling feels heavy. Build quality - engine etc are excellent, accessories are terrible. Appearance - boxy and out dated, designed in the mid 80's. Cost of ownership - 60 mpg! very good, no maintenance required yet. Fun factor - definately not fun to drive, but times are hard! Primary Use: Commuting to work |

Citreon Ax Elation 3 Door — The one I have is the basic 1 litre, 4 speed Elation Model.Whilst it isnt (surprise surprise) particularly quick with just 50 hp it only weighs 690 kgs-so its no snail either.Ofcourse having 4 speeds makes it more suitable to the city than the highway and above 100 kmh it starts to get the speed shakes due to it lightness etc. The handling is pretty good for such a small narrow vehicle -bearing in mind this version hasnt got powersteering (nor does it actually need it) Climbing small inclines is well dealt with due to its lightweight.Although the brakes are a known weak point, good driving means this shouldnt ever present itself as a problem as the car has good engine breaking characterisics. The build quality isnt fantastic-but its not a dissapointment either for what it is-it just deserves some gentle hands. It can be quite noisy due to minimal sound deadening but for short journeys this shouldnt be a major problem. For a car of its size the suspension gives quite a comfortable ride too. For me the minor niggles are- the seating position which cant be vertically adjusted and means driving like a monkey (arms stretched at times) which can be uncomfortable and the cramped rear seats althought the front seats and boot are pretty spacious for such a small car.The pedals are tiny and the gearbox needs some getting used to but it is easy once you get around it.Somethings are slightly hidden and require some french intuition to find ;) Its safety could be questionable in an accident due to the old design with minimal crumple zones and extensive plastic-but again no car is infallible in an accident. Looks are subjective to peoples individual taste-imo the AX definatley has an inteersting look which is typically citreon but is quite attractive. So far cost of ownership has been inexpensive with the insurance and tax bieng cheap and the petrol bills very small due to the cars great fuel economy 50-60 mpg with £30 or $50 filling a tank which will go on for 300-400 miles easily with calm driving. Overall, this car can be described as nippy if not fast and it is fun to drive at lower speeds due to its nimble handling and light weight. For what it is (city car/retro supermini) it is a very accomplished little car- if basic transport is all you need, this car does a lot more right then what it does wrong and is suitable for motorists who need an economical vehicle for in the city. |
