The car featured an inline, six cylinder engine that produced 228 horses. The car had a four speed gearbox.
But initial owners weren't immediately smitten with the S320, complaining of a variety of problems in written reviews. Common themes included oil leaks, expensive maintenance costs and door seal problems.

Mercedes renamed many of its S-Class vehicles in the 1994 model year to decrease confusion and have the model numbers reflect the car's engine size. So the S-Class vehicle with the 4.2 liter, V8 engine that produced 275 horses was newly christened the S420.
Fuel economy improved and the S420 was switched to H-rated tires in 1994.
Some owners would have liked to see a "quicker start," but it was still a powerful and impressive car.
