Mercedes-Benz introduced the S320 in the 1994 model year as an entry-level vehicle in its vaunted S-Class. The S320 was engineered to compete directly with the Jaguar XJ6.

The car featured an inline, six cylinder engine that produced 228 horses. The car had a four speed gearbox.

But initial owners weren't immediately smitten with the S320, complaining of a variety of problems in written reviews. Common themes included oil leaks, expensive maintenance costs and door seal problems.

Mercedes-Benz produced the S350 as a diesel-powered option in its upper end S-Class in the 1994 and 1995 model years. The vehicle was dropped in the 1996 model year, leaving only gasoline engines in the S-class.

Like its gas-powered sibling, the S320, the S350 rode on a 119.7-inch wheel base.

Mercedes renamed many of its S-Class vehicles in the 1994 model year to decrease confusion and have the model numbers reflect the car's engine size. So the S-Class vehicle with the 4.2 liter, V8 engine that produced 275 horses was newly christened the S420.

Fuel economy improved and the S420 was switched to H-rated tires in 1994.

Some owners would have liked to see a "quicker start," but it was still a powerful and impressive car.
