Seatbelts from Hell

65

1990 Toyota Camry: It's All Good Except The Seatbelts From Hell — This car is nothing short of amazing. It's got over 250,000 miles on it, needs a valve adjustment (tock tock tock) and has Japanese take-out replacement transmission. One of these days I'll get the CV joints fixed....but the thing gets 37 mpg on the highway! And this is the Alaska type of road, two-lane, humpy-bumpy, up and down hill and over frost heaves no matter where you go. It's not exactly perky after all those miles, but the heater and the air conditioning still work great, and the steering response is also just like new. It's fun to drive, quiet, and would be comfortable if the seats weren't so worn out. The worst thing about it: 1) automatic seat belts. Sure, you get an extra break on your car insurance for having them, but try getting out out of the car! They slide and get caught on things. Now imagine you have to dogs on leashes you need to get out of the car along with yourself and there's this seat belt blocking their (and your) exit just like some ribbon across a finish line. The dogs tangle their leashes every time. It's maddening. PLUS you have to lever yourself out of the little hole the drive sits in. It's very difficult to get out of this car. And no, I don't weigh 300 lbs. I'm a normal-sized person. Be that as it may, I'd buy another one of these babies in a heartbeat. They're cheap, around $1500, and they run forever.

Pros

The car has pretty much just run like the Energizer Bunny all its life.  The engine is the original factory engine from 89. Changing the oil every three thousand miles has really paid off.  The original body and the original factory paint still look pretty good after all the years, so this could be a great car to restore. Antique status is not far off, and this car deserves to hit 400K.

Cons

The car has lost some power over the years and it may have worn motor mounts.

A Well Loved Family Member And Reliable Friend. — This car has spanned three generations of drivers in my family. I love this car! I want to see it go to someone that appreciates the durability of this vehicle or to someone with a passion for restoring deserving vehicles. The car has served my family well. She would make a great parts vehicle (organ donor car) also!

Cons

bland styling

Great Car — It was a 5 spd for learning to drive on. Was deceivingly quick for a rather bland family sedan. It was incredibly well built and took a lot of abuse from several of us driving it.

Overall, Tough Car — when i first got it for 200 dollars it was a great car, very rusty and rotten but a good car, it has just about 370,000 km on it and the motor still works perfect and so does the transmission. overall i am happy with that but unfortunately everything around the drivetrain was no good, good reliable car but too rotten

Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.)

Good Starter Car. — It was a reliable car. It took a beating and kept on going. Until my Brother shot one of the rods through it and junked it. It was the first car that I drove and had in my name. I miss it.
