Proshandling, style, speed, attention! Consbrakes, the targa top rattled, original type 4 motor was under powered

My Sexy 914 2.0 — What an amazing ride. I bought this from a friend, and about a month later the original 1.7 crapped out. I tore it apart and bored out the motor to a high compression 2.0L with dual Webber carbs, I ripped the OG fuel injection out right away! I converted the lifters to hydraulic so I never had to adjust them again. If you know these cars, you understand why I did that! It was like night and day. This thing sounded mean. It hauled ass and handled better than any 911 I had driven. They carbs were tuned just right. The side shift 5 speed tranny always gave me trouble, the first gear synchros were on the way out so it would always grind unless I was very cautious. This 914 was one of the cleanest I had ever seen. It was the original polar silver and the only rust it had was in the "hell hole" but, I relocated the battery to the rear trunk and put some rust inhibitor on it. I never really got to enjoy it because I sold it a few months later. I made a huge profit though. It was a sexy car indeed, These are not the cheapest or most affordable cars to own. Most people don't really have respect for them because it was really just a Volkswagen with the Porsche emblem. |

I Wish I Still Had It. Sold It Right After I Restored It. — The 914 was an amazing car! The quality was more than acceptable, the handling performance was outstanding however the engine was sorely underpowered. Mine was just the 1.7L air cooled opposed four. Overall, I loved the car. It served it's purpose at the time. It gave me focus in life and kept me out of trouble. Extremely low maintenance and whatever wore out, because many of the parts were interchangeable with VWs, it was really inexpensive to repair. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |

Ninefourteen — It's got a small engine but it's quick and very agile. It takes corners like a dream. It gets around 28 mpg but i have to use premium. It's absolutely addicting once you drive it. Trust me. Once i drop in a 200+ hp H6 it'll be even more fun =]. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |

ProsFun project and drive. ConsNot considered a true "Porsche" among some circles.

Go Padres. — The 2.0 four cylinder in the 914 4's is potent with a little bit of work. I opted to have the fuel injection removed and 2 webber carbs put in their place. Still tinkering and working around some problems after the engine rebuild but the car still has no problems starting every day. The 914 is an extremely well built car with great handeling and brakes. The common brake swap with the brakes from the BMW 3 series is the next upgrade. Funny looking Porsche, great project car, and cheap to upgrade considering it's VW roots. Primary Use: Sport/fun (spirited driving, track racing, off-roading, etc.) |

Just A Fun Basic Sports Car Regardless Of It's Pedigree. — One of the most underrated cars ever made. Was it a real Porsche? Who cares. With a great deal of mods, suspension, wheels and tires and engine mods including conversion to Weber carbs this was a great handling car. Not fast by any means but could outhandle just about anything. The brakes only got stronger with use. This was one car I was sorry to see go. Still look at used ones... All the car mags hated them until they went out of production then they loved them. Go figure. Owned it for 16 years. Time to move on. |
